BLACK MOUNTAIN — The Draughn volleyball team secured a four-set Western Highlands 1A/2A Conference victory on the road on Wednesday, knocking off host Owen 22-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-16 to continue a dominant run through the league slate.
The Lady Wildcats (13-4, 8-0 WHC) were paced offensively by Bailey Mozeley (12 kills, three aces), Lyrical Edwards (10 kills), Kylie Corpening (six kills), Bella Whitson (three kills), and Allyson Auton (three aces, 20 assists).
Top players on defense for DHS were Corpening (eight blocks) and Whitson (six blocks).
Alexander Central 3, Freedom 0
The Lady Patriots (3-13, 0-5 Northwestern 3A/4A Conf.) were denied their first conference victory with a shutout loss at home in AV¶ĚĘÓƵ on Wednesday, falling 25-17, 25-22, 25-16.
On offense, FHS was led by Kaitlyn Hagmann (four kills, ace), Ava Whitaker (four kills, ace), Madelyn LeMaster (three kills, ace), Mia Furches (two kills), Katie Settle (kill), Cassidy Taylor (ace), Kennedy Denton (10 assists).

The Lady Cavaliers (8-8, 4-5 Catawba Valley 2A Conf.) fell to .500 overall and below that mark in league play with a straight-sets loss at home in Icard on Tuesday, 25-9, 25-21, 25-12.
Offensively, EBHS was led by Raegan Carter (four kills, ace), Karlie Chester (three kills), Sarah Angel (kill), Ashaunah Reinhardt-Phillips (kill), Kyndal Morrison (kill) and Addy Fortenberry (six assists).
EB’s defensive leaders were Fortenberry (seven digs, five blocks), Angel (six digs, seven receptions), Morrison (four digs, six receptions), Reinhardt-Phillips (four digs, reception), Hermione Garro (four digs), Carissa Towery (four digs, four receptions), Giselle Martinez (three digs, nine receptions), Amanda McLean (two digs, five receptions), Carter (block) and Chester (reception).

The Lady Dragons (1-11, 0-4 WHC) remained winless in conference play with their 11th straight loss overall, falling on Tuesday on the road in Burnsville, 25-16, 25-15, 25-18.

The Lady Cavaliers (2-7, 1-3 CVAC) picked up their first conference victory with a shutout in a singles-only match on the road in Claremont on Tuesday.
EBHS’ wins came from No. 1 Braelyn Stilwell 6-0, 6-0; No. 2 Anna Coble 6-0, 6-0; No. 3 Maci McNeil 6-2, 6-3; No. 4 Piper Chapman 6-4, 3-6, 10-8; No. 5 Aubrey Curnutte 6-4, 6-1; and No. 6 Maliena Smith 6-4, 6-3.
Ashe County 9, Freedom 0
The Lady Patriots (0-7, 0-7 NWC) remained winless with a shutout conference loss at home in AV¶ĚĘÓƵ on Wednesday.
At No. 2 singles, Leah Kirksey was FHS’ most competitive player, falling 8-8 (10-7).

NCSSM-AV¶ĚĘÓƵ at St. Stephens meet
The Dragons participated in a 13-team nonconference meet in Hickory on Tuesday, with Bandys, Bunker Hill, East Lincoln, Foard, Hickory, North Iredell, North Lincoln, Run 4 Life Iredell, Stuart Cramer, University Christian, West Iredell and the host Indians also in competition.
On the boys side, NCSSM-AV¶ĚĘÓƵ was led by Max Vaughan (fourth; 17:32.00), followed by Rohin Patel (27th), Brayden Cullen (28th), Jack Lyons (31st), Nash Taylor (35th), Peter Tenholder (54th), Josh Gandy (67th), Owen Maur (68th), Anish Velagapudi (112th) and Pete Ryden (130th).
In the girls race, the Lady Dragons were paced by Elizabeth Fleury (17th; 22:33.60), along with Mickayla Belus (27th), Zuzanna Mikolajec (29th), Sienna Hackshaw (70th) and Eva LaChapelle (76th).
GIRLS GOLF
East Burke in CVAC match at Lincoln
The Lady Cavaliers (369) participated in Wednesday’s CVAC match at Lincoln Country Club in Lincolnton, finishing sixth behind West Lincoln (264), Maiden (354), Bandys (357), Newton-Conover (361) and Lincolnton (363).
EBHS was led by Sophia Vaughn (119; 10th), Alexis Russell (124; 12th), Reagan Austin (126) and Sara Evans (126).
