The identity of a man who died in late June after police said he jumped out of a moving pickup truck has been released.
David Tillman Webb, 57, died June 26 after jumping from a moving pickup truck on US Highway 70 just west of the Thrifty Mart, said Shane Trull, acting police chief for the town of Glen Alpine.
Webb did not have any form of identification with him at the time of his death, Trull said. His last known address was a shelter in McDowell County. Webb didn’t have any family living in the area, authorities said.
James Wilkie Woodard, 36, of John Reep Street, Morganton, was charged with felony hit and run after the incident, Trull said.
Woodard told police he and Webb had gone to a scrapyard in McDowell County where they sold a car for parts, according to a previous News Herald article. When they were driving back to Burke County, Woodard said the pair stopped at a bank to cash the check for about $350 and left the envelope with the cash in the center console of the truck.

Once the pair made it to U.S. Highway 70, Woodard told police Webb grabbed the cash and tried to jump from the vehicle, the article said. Woodard said he slammed on the brakes and tried to stop but drove off when he thought Webb was free of the vehicle.
Trull said he plans to meet with the district attorney’s office soon to discuss additional charges that could be issued in the case.
